Vertebral Subluxation Complex
The vertebral subluxation complex is the chiropractic term for the changes that occur in and around a spinal joint when a vertebra is misaligned or not moving properly. Rather than a single problem, it describes several components that tend to occur together.
Components of the Subluxation Complex
- Misalignment of the vertebra (kinesiopathology) — the bone moves out of its normal position or loses its normal range of motion.
- Nerve pressure or irritation (neuropathology) — the misalignment can irritate or compress nearby nerves, interfering with signals between the brain and body.
- Muscle changes (myopathology) — surrounding muscles may spasm, weaken, or develop scar tissue over time.
- Soft-tissue damage (histopathology) — ligaments, discs, and other tissues can become inflamed or damaged.
- Spinal decay (pathophysiology) — over time, uncorrected subluxations can contribute to degeneration of the spine.
Why It Matters
Because the nervous system coordinates nearly every function in the body, ongoing nerve interference from a subluxation can affect far more than just local pain. Chiropractic care aims to identify these subluxations and correct them with specific adjustments, restoring proper motion and relieving pressure on the nervous system.
If you would like to know whether subluxations may be affecting you, contact our Sulphur Springs office for an evaluation.
